What Is Online Therapy and How Does It Work in Pennsylvania?

Online therapy (sometimes called teletherapy, remote therapy, or virtual counseling) is therapy that happens over a secure video platform. You and your therapist meet live, just like in person, but from the comfort of your own space. Many people find it more private and convenient, especially when juggling work, caregiving, or simply the realities of modern life.

Why Choose Online Therapy in PA?

Remote therapy can be just as effective as in-person therapy for a wide range of mental health needs, and for many people, it’s even more convenient and emotionally safe. By engaging in online therapy you get to choose the environment that feels the safest.

The good news? Therapy provides support, tools, and strategies to help you move forward with more confidence and ease.

Is Online Therapy Effective in PA?

Research consistently shows that online therapy – whether referred to as virtual, telehealth, or remote therapy in these studies – is just as effective as in-person therapy for many mental health concerns. It can be a meaningful and powerful way to receive care:

  • A 2021 review found that video-based psychotherapy is effective across a variety of mental health diagnoses, with client satisfaction and therapeutic relationships comparable to in-person care (Fernandez et al., 2021).
  • The APA published research reinforcing that remote therapy led to clinically significant improvements in symptoms of anxiety and depression (APA PsycNet, 2022).
  • Additional studies have found that teletherapy during the COVID-19 pandemic not only sustained care but improved access, particularly for underserved populations (Zhou et al., 2022).
  • A 2022 meta-analysis reported that internet-based therapy was effective for adult mental health outcomes (Andersson et al., 2022).

Is EMDR Therapy Effective Online?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful therapy for processing trauma and emotional distress. The good news? It works well online, too.

A 2023 study comparing in-person and remote EMDR found no significant difference in outcomes-both groups showed marked improvement in PTSD and trauma symptoms (Lenferink et al., 2023).

A 2023 overview by the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) highlighted emerging research showing that online EMDR therapy can be as effective as in-person treatment, with studies supporting its use for PTSD, trauma, and anxiety. The findings emphasize the importance of proper therapist training and client preparation for successful outcomes (EMDRIA, 2023).

Our therapists are trained and licensed in EMDR, and are equipped to run EMDR sessions online. No additional equipment is required to do so.

Is Art Therapy Effective Online?

Art therapy can be deeply supportive, even online. Using materials you have at home, art can help externalize emotion, support regulation, and foster healing. The Bloom Therapy team is also happy to send you materials as needed.

A 2023 study published in The Arts in Psychotherapy found that online art therapy sessions delivered during the pandemic were effective in reducing anxiety and improving emotional expression in clients, especially those managing trauma and life transitions (Orkibi & Ram-Vlasov, 2023).

Additionally, a separate 2023 study published in The Arts in Psychotherapy evaluated the efficacy of online art psychotherapy on ego functions, emotion regulation, and interpersonal relationship styles. The findings indicated that online art therapy significantly improved emotion regulation and interpersonal relationships, supporting its effectiveness in virtual settings.

Our counselors are Board Certified Art Therapists, and specifically trained for remote Art Therapy sessions.

Is Brainspotting Effective Online?

Brainspotting therapy can be effectively conducted online, offering a powerful approach to healing trauma and emotional distress from the comfort of your own space. This method utilizes specific eye positions to access unprocessed trauma in the brain, facilitating deep emotional processing.

Recent research supports the efficacy of online Brainspotting:

A 2024 study published in the Mental Health Review Journal examined the impact of online Brainspotting therapy on individuals with PTSD symptoms resulting from intimate sexual violence. The study found significant reductions in PTSD symptoms and changes in brain metabolism, indicating the therapy’s effectiveness in an online setting .

Another study highlighted in the Archives of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy demonstrated that Brainspotting therapy led to significant improvements in PTSD symptoms among participants, with effects maintained during follow-up evaluations .

At Bloom Therapy, our therapists are trained in delivering Brainspotting therapy virtually, ensuring a secure and supportive environment for your healing journey.

Preparing for Online Therapy: Tips for a Supportive Virtual Experience in PA

It helps to set the stage for your sessions so you feel grounded and focused. A few simple steps can go a long way:

  • Choose a quiet, private space where you feel safe and comfortable
  • Consider using headphones for more privacy and fewer distractions
  • Have a glass of water, journal, or comforting item nearby
  • Allow time before and after to reflect or transition
  • Gather any creative materials you might use in art therapy (paper, markers, etc.)

Questions to Ask When Evaluating an Online Therapist in Pennsylvania

Finding the right fit matters. These questions can help you feel more confident as you explore your options. They’re not just about credentials, they’re about connection, safety, and feeling understood.

  • Are you licensed to practice in Pennsylvania?
Therapists must be licensed in the state where you live. This ensures they’re qualified and accountable to local ethics boards.
  • Do you live in Pennsylvania or primarily practice here?
Some therapists may be licensed in multiple states but live elsewhere. It’s okay to ask where they’re based and whether they understand the local context that may affect your care.
  • What is your experience with online therapy?
Ask how long they’ve been practicing virtually and how they’ve adapted their approach for a virtual setting.
  • Do you offer approaches like EMDR or Art Therapy virtually?
If you’re interested in these methods, it’s important to ask how they’re facilitated remotely and what setup is needed.
  • What types of clients do you typically work with?
Hearing about their experience with people facing similar challenges can help you understand if they’re the right match.
  • How do you build connection and trust online?
Ask how they create a safe, engaging space through a screen, and what makes a strong therapeutic alliance in their view.
  • How do you protect privacy in virtual sessions?
Your therapist should use HIPAA-compliant platforms and explain how they maintain confidentiality in their own space.
  • How do we decide if it’s a good fit?
Most therapists offer a consultation, this is a chance to ask questions, share what you’re looking for, and see how the conversation feels.
